Three years ago, San Carlos resident Bonnie Deming was at a hair salon appointment when two women, Louise Smith and Tobie Scheibel, told her she had to be in the San Diego Follies.

The then 80-year-old was skeptical at first but after a bit of soul searching and looking back on her life as a dancer — in high school she performed in Balboa Park, as a teacher she taught her students folk dances, and in Mrs. San Diego and Mrs. California contests performing Hawaiian dances — Demming decided to audition.

Local singer gets a shot on ‘The Voice’

Michael Sanchez has gone from being a hometown piano player to a nationwide name — thanks to a load of talent, a dose of gumption, and Alicia Keyes.

The La Mesa resident is part of Team Alicia on season 11 of NBC’s “The Voice,” the singing competition. Tune in this Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, at 8 p.m. to watch him in the Knockout round. This is the final phase before the show goes live.
